Mean Green Tropical Smoothie

12 Mar

I am obsessed with kale.  Sometimes, I have a hard time deciphering whether I love something on its own or whether I have fallen in love with it because I know it’s good for me. I guess at some point, there isn’t a difference.  Kale is something that’s easy to love and its ridiculously good for you.

One of the easiest (and IMHO the most delicious) ways to enjoy this leafy green is in a smoothie.  Many people have already joined the kale band wagon, but if you still haven’t this smoothie might hurry you along. For those of you who shudder at the thought of eating your greens this way, I urge you to try: it literally tastes like something from a Caribbean resort, minus the rum.  On second thought, maybe rum would be a good addition….  Hello, St. Patty’s day!

makes approx. 24 oz  of delicious smoothie

6 ice cubes
35 g frozen pineapple
35 g frozen mango
small ripe banana, preferably frozen (100g)
115 g kale (organic preferable)
8 oz water (or more if needed)

Put ingredients in the blender in the order listed.  Blend on high until smooth (or use smoothie setting on a Vitamix).

Drink and be amazed that you can’t even taste the kale.

Those are some of my favorite daily smoothie ingredients, for sure!

Me too. I just made one with kale and spinach this morning and it is amazing how much earthier spinach tastes than kale – kale is easily disguised in smoothies, where as spinach has a definite green taste.

I actually find the opposite, especially when I use lacinato kale, but I love them both!

Yes – I’ve been using green curly. But I agree, leafy greens are delicious!
