Cambridge Chinese Restaurants

18 Oct

Here is a list of the BEST Chinese restaurants in the Cambridge/Somerville area and some of the best vegetarian (and a few fish) dishes. (My husband eats meat on occasion, so I also mention some authentic meat dishes to order if you happen to eat out with the non-vegetarians!)

The MUST try foods are marked with a *, but everything is delicious!

Wang’s Fast Food

509 Broadway
Somerville, MA 02145

(617) 623-2982

Wang’s is an amazing hole in the wall restaurant.  It is at the edge of Magoun Square on Broadway (towards Teele Square).  It is slightly grungy in appearance (you know its authentic) and the food more than makes up for any misgivings you might have about this.  The kitchen is nearly twice the size of the dining area (most people order out but I DEFINITELY recommend eating there) and you have to go through it to get to the bathroom.  You should definitely make a trip there so you can see the women making the dumplings.  The dumplings are far and away the best food here – and what makes Wang’s a famous (yet hidden) gem! (You can also order frozen bags of dumplings to take home with you for very cheap.) NOTE: CLOSED TUESDAYS

What to try:

Vegetarian Leek Dumplings AND (or) Vegetarian Spinach Dumplings*

Vegetarian Leek Pie

Spicy Chinese Cabbage (a lot like kimchee if you’ve had it)

Seaweed with Garlic Sauce

Chinese Bean Curd Soup

Dry Sauteed String Beans * (I order it extra spicy)

Shredded Tofu with Spicy Green Pepper* (Not on the menu – I made this one up but they make it for me all the time. He will probably like it if someone else orders!)

Chinese Spinach in Garlic Sauce

MEAT DISH: Szechuan Style Bone-in Chicken (my husband says this is amazing, and Wang agrees)

Qingdao Garden

2382 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02421
(617) 492-7540
Qingdao Garden lies on Mass ave just off Cameron St (nearest to Davis Square). It is a great restaurant that also features amazing authentic dumplings (also available frozen to go).  It is a toss up which restaurant does them better – I am truly torn on the matter.  The decor is much more upscale and the restaurant recently underwent a major makeover – it nearly doubled in space. (There was a LARGE worry that it would never reopen, but thankfully it did!) This is a must visit restaurant. NOTE: CLOSED TUESDAYS

What to try:

Vegetarian Spinach or Leek Dumplings*

Szechuan Spicy Chinese Cabbage

“Twice Cooked Tofu” Peking Style* (again, not on the menu but they are happy to make it!)

Sauteed Pea Pod Stems (I order it spicy)

Hot and Spicy Green Beans*

Yu Hsiang Eggplant

Boiled Fish Fillet in Fiery Sauce* (this is similar to Szechuan Fish Stew)

MEAT: Lamb with Cumin and Spicy Sauce; Pork with Cilantro

Zoe’s

296 Beacon Street
Somerville, MA 02143

(617) 864-6265
Zoe’s was my local go to for years – I used to live right next to it on Beacon – It is between Harvard Law School and Porter Square. It is family owned (named after the owner’s daughter).  They are extremely kind there and make incredible authentic Szechuan Chinese.  It gets less than perfect reviews on Yelp, but many of the people there are reviewing its orange chicken and crab rangoon (neither of which are very authentic). It is worth a visit.

What to try:

Scallion pancakes*

Bean Thread Noodle with Hot and Sour Sauce* (a spicy and sour rice noodle appetizer)

“Double Cooked” Tofu* (once again, not on the menu, but they definitely know the dish by now)

Ma Po Tofu

Stir Fried Green Beans*

Kung Pao Tofu (ok, so not authentic at all, but delicious)

Hunan Style Fish Fillet

Whole Fish with Chili Miso Sauce

MEAT: Lamb with Cumin and Spicy Sauce

I don’t love Chinese food, but I do love Zoe’s.
